Violence against women througout life: study among primary healthcare female users

Summary: Introduction: Violence is a causative phenomenon of several consequences to women’s health, manifested by gender inequalities. Women in violence situation are received every day in health centers and generally are not considered as victims. It contributes to the underreporting of cases and builds the violence as a silent epidemic. Objective: This article aims to estimate prevalence of intimate partner violence against women throughout life of registered female users of public health centers in city of Vitória, Espírito Santo, as also investigate the association of the phenomenon with socioeconomic factors, behavioral characteristics and women’s life experience. Methodology: It is about a cross sectional study that evaluated the data of a research made in 2014 between march and september, in 26 health centers in city of Vitória, WHERE 991 women aged between 20 and 59 years were interviewed. It was used suitable instruments to socioeconomic data collection. To identify violence processes (psychological violence, physical violence and sexual violence) it was used the World Health Organization’s instrument titled Violence Against Women. Results: The prevalence of intimate partner violence against women was: psychological violence 57,6% (95% CI 54,6–60,7); physical violence 39,3% (95% CI 36,2–42,3) and sexual violence 18,0% (95% CI 15,7–20,5). Women with up to 8 years of education in the low-income group, divorced, smokers and with drug use history, whose mother suffered intimate partner violence, presented high prevalence of violence (p<0,05).Product: Making an educational tool in a flip chart format, approaching intimate partner violence against women, impacts of violence to women and family’s health and the coping network support in city of Vitória. Conclusion: It was verified a high prevalence of intimate partner violence practiced throughout life against primary healthcare female users; association of psychological violence, physical violence and sexual violence with sociodemographic experiences, behavioral experience, personal experience and maternal experience of violence. At this point, the flip chart consists in an important support tool to professionals of health and educational groups, since it can amplify the actions for health and discussions about this subject with women, focusing not only the cycle interruption, but also the detection and prevention of the problem.
