Summary: Introduction: The nursing process is the recommended instrument for the operationalization of nursing care. In a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), it is still performed in a fragmented way and does not use a taxonomy to support the process. Objective: To develop an app to perform the nursing process in the care of the newborn. Methodology: This is a qualitative, two-step study. First, the participative methodology of action research, provided seminars for the elaboration and validation of instruments for history, diagnosis and nursing interventions. In the second stage, an app was developed to operationalize the execution and registration of the nursing process. Eleven nurses at the NICU of the Hospital Universitário Cassiano Antônio de Moraes participated in the study. The five seminars took place from January to March 2017, and the speeches were recorded and transcribed for further analysis. The application was elaborated from March to December 2017. Results: Tools for historical, diagnostic and nursing interventions were elaborated and validated, considering the theoretical reference of the Basic Human Needs of Wanda Horta and the taxonomy of the International Classification for Nursing Practice. These instruments formed the basis for the development of the app. Products: Regarding the products, an instrument for the history and diagnosis of nursing and another one for nursing interventions were elaborated. An app for execution and registration of the nursing process was also developed. Conclusion: The nursing process is a daily tool of nursing care. Technologies that make it more effective and efficient are necessary, aiming to improve the quality and assertiveness of nursing care. An app that operationalized the nursing process was able to make nursing assistance safer, faster and more scientific.
