Summary: ABSTRACT
Introduction: Penile cancer constitutes a major problem for men’s health in the contemporary world, and penectomy presents for many of them, as the only therapeutic option in the face of late diagnosis. Objectives: Understand and describe the process of re-des-construction the masculinity of patients undergoing penectomy. Method: A qualitative study, retrospective from the data description analysis of individuals who underwent partial or total amputation of the penis at a University Hospital in the Southeast region of Brazil. Data were collected from open interviews, recorded interviews and field diary entries, from December 2017 to February 2018.This is a transversal and retrospective epidemiological study done from the analysis of the secondary data of individuals who have been submitted to heart surgery at a university hospital in the South-East region of Brazil. Results: Transcripts of five patients submitted to penectomization were transcribed between December 2017 and February 2018. Although the area's studies point to the incidence of penile cancer in subjects older than seventy years, in this study it was observed that only two fit the established average, the others presented lower age. Four of the subjects had a common employment history (agricultural occupation). Still, some similar characteristics were denoted and that perhaps increased risks to the illness, such as levels of schooling, socioeconomic characteristics, self-medication and hygiene habits. As well as factors of aggravation, it was noticed that the analyzed subjects evidenced late diagnoses, certainly favoring a penectomy. Nevertheless, they shared important psychological reactions, all of which associated amputation with the will to live. Product: Elaboration of two articles that deal with the historical presentation of the first recorded penectomy, and the survey on the affections of the penectomized subjects due to malignant tumors. Finally, an informative video on hygiene habits was developed, whose purpose is to thin one of the highlights of the onset of penile cancer, which, in turn, will be available to children in the age group of 6 to 11 years. Conclusion: The delay in seeking help, tolerance and consequent coexistence with pain, lack of information, hygienic habits, provide a procedure that could probably be avoided in need. When subjected to such a laceration, and subjected to a long and painful process, man remains to seek a subjective way of situating himself in society. re-des-construction masculinity becomes an inescapable challenge. Being a network of affections among institutions such as family, church, work, as well as bonds of friendship, fundamental supports.
